Zara Office City Bag Vs. Zara Mini Office City Bag

A wise man once said, "You can't be a real blogger without a Zara City Bag." Its simple style make it easy to pair with any outfit, and its many compartments make it practical for transporting and finding our kitsch stationery and many MAC lipsticks.

Alright, piss-taking aside, these are very good looking bags. I've wanted a City Bag of some description for a while, as I travel a lot, I need a reasonably sized bag, with compartments to organise my passport, railcard, wallet etc. I ended up buying myself the mini version as my local Zara shop did not have the larger one in black, but this was only after much debate as to whether I should just order the big one. I actually received the larger one for Christmas, so now I have the best of both worlds. I imagine that I'm not the only one who has debated whether or not they really need such a large bag, so I'm going to do a direct comparison between the two to help you guys choose which one suits your needs. (I believe both bags are reduced in the sales at the moment).

Festive Party Look: Red and Gold

This is the look I created for my early Christmas celebrations with my family. I did shimmery, gold eyes and a red lip. You could definitely miss out the red lipstick as it's quite a full on look on the eyes, but I felt like being extra festive.

Christmas Nails

I have only recently gotten into doing my nails and using special effect nail varnishes. Before, I was very much set in my ways of using neutral nail varnishes every so often. With my new found 'daringness' in the nail department, I thought I'd have a go at doing some festive nails with red and glitter ombré.

Year abroad #3

I feel like I haven't updated you guys in ages. It's actually my last weekend in Tours before I go back for Christmas, and I am so excited to go back and see everyone. I'm currently in the middle of my exams, which is quite stressful. At Newcastle, I usually do all of my exams after Christmas, but here, some take place before Christmas and others happen after. I feel really ill prepared for the exams I have now, because I've only had a week to revise really. Although, I only need 50% to pass and I have been writing ERASMUS in large letters next to my name, so the lecturer takes pity on me when marking.

November Favourites

As we come to the end of November, it's time to sum up my absolute favourite products of the month.

Lush Big Shampoo and Conditioner

After hearing really positive reviews about this, I decided to take the plunge into Lush hair care. As I have a lot of hair, it is very heavy and can sometimes look a bit flat, so I was in the mood for something that would give a bit of lift at the roots. The fact that this contains chunks of sea salt sold me, because I love the way my hair looks when I get out of the sea, but sea spray never works for me. This actually has the same effect, but without the horrible texture, so my hair is wavy, volumised and soft. I was intimidated by the solid conditioner (not photographed) at first,  as I wasn't sure on how to use it. I tend to rip a bit off, smush it in my hands and then rub it into the ends of my hair, making sure I leave it for a couple of minutes. It isn't the most moisturising of conditioners, although it does leave my hair feeling nice and soft, so I do make sure to use a hair mask every week. These also smell incredible. I am rubbish at describing scents, but I'd describe these two products as having a very exotic smell. According to Lush, they include coconut, lemons, limes, mandarin, orange, neroli and vanilla. The smell does last well on the hair, I wash my hair every other day and I could still smell the fragrance then! They are quite expensive products, but you really don't need to use much, especially the shampoo, which creates a wonderful lather.

Stroke of Midnight de MAC: La Critique

Voici mes opinions...

MAC Stroke of Midnight: Review and Swatches

This is a collection that I have been pining over ever since I first saw it. As I live in France, I had to wait a frustrating couple of days after the UK release to get my hands on some of these goodies, but when I did, it was well worth it. I ordered the Violet Lip Bag and the Nude Eye Bag, and I've been trying them out for the past week. Here are my thoughts...

Monday 18 November 2013

Nails Inc. Nail Polish Diary

I saw this on Feel Unique and I just had to. It includes 12 full sized Nails Inc. nail varnishes (one for every month of the year) for £42. Seeing as DHL removed most of my nail varnishes from my suitcase when it was sent over to France, I was very much IN NEED (ahem) of some new ones.

Dior Mystic Metallics Bonne Étoile Palette: Review

On Saturday, I picked up a palette which I have been eyeing up for ages. It is the Bonne Étoile Palette from Dior's Mystic Metallics Autumn 2013 collection. This is one of two palettes from the collection, the other housing purples and slivers. This is definitely the earthier of the two, with greens and browns. I originally wanted the Constellation palette, but I have a lot of very similar colours, so I decided to get Bonne Étoile instead. You can find the palette here

Mac Cranberry Eyeshadow Tutorial

On Sunday's BBloggers chat on Twitter, I noticed that a lot of people said that they wanted Cranberry from Mac, especially as it's such a great Autumnal colour. I also noticed that a lot of people said that they weren't sure how to wear it without looking like they have pinkeye. I'll just show you the way that I enjoy wearing it, although there might well be other great ways of wearing it too. This post links in quite nicely with my eyeshadow post for the starting off project and I'll be using the same techniques and brushes here as in that post.

Birthday Make Up Haul

Seeing as my birthday was over a month ago, this post is really really late, but I have been busy so I have only just got round to it. I won't go into everything I received/ bought with my birthday money because that seems a bit braggy to me. BUT, I will share with you the awesome make up products my boyfriend bought for me. Some of these products have actually been mentioned in previous posts, but I haven't reviewed any of them in full, so if you're interested in one of them, let me know in the comments and I'll do a full on review for you.

Tuesday 15 October 2013

The Starting Off Project: Eye Shadow

I feel like every week I say "OH MY GOD THIS IS MY FAVOURITE TYPE OF MAKE UP PRODUCT EVER....apart from all of the other products I say are my favourite...". Anyway, without wanting to say this again, or sound really anticlimactic; I really, really, really like eyeshadow. Like in a big, big way. OK, let's get on with it.

Tuesday 8 October 2013

The Starting Off Project: Eyeliner

Eyeliner was one of the very first make up products I wore religiously...even without wearing any other make up (oh dear)! There are a number of different types of eyeliner and ways of wearing it; let's begin.

Tuesday 1 October 2013

The SO Project: Mascara

Mascara is definitely an important product that you can't really miss out if you're going to wear makeup. Bare lashes tend to look a bit odd when they are contrasted against eye shadow and eyeliner. I have tried a lot of different mascaras, but I've never really stuck to one. I will tend to use anything, and I've never really had any terrible results with mascara, but this isn't to say that there's no such thing as a 'bad mascara'!

Mascara is generally used to enhance the eyes by adding length and volume to the lashes while (normally) darkening them...although you can buy coloured mascara. Depending on the formula, mascara will lengthen or volumise the lashes to different extents. As I always say...it's up to you to choose what you want.

Nails Inc Leather Effect in Ladbroke Grove

I bought this nail varnish in a Feel Unique haul, which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. I've had a couple of weeks to try it out now, and I can definitely say I'm impressed. This was my first venture into textured nail varnish, and now I've tried one, I'm anxious to try lots of different types! I bought Ladbroke Grove, which is a neon coral pink, but now it's the start Autumn I kind of wish I'd bought Shoreditch Lane (burgundy). Anyway, here is the full catalogue of leather effect nail varnishes from Nails Inc..

Tuesday 24 September 2013

The SO Project: Blusher

Sorry, sorry, sorry for missing last week's post. I was up to my ears with things to sort out, so I forgot. But I'm back this week, and I'm so glad, because we will be talking about my favourite make up product ever, blusher. I will not leave the house without blush on; I really feel like it's one of those products that will make you look pretty no matter how tired, or ill you feel. Even if I have no time to put on any other make up, I will sweep some blusher across my cheeks before I leave to go out.

Mon Année à L'étranger #2

Coucou!

Year Abroad #2

Coucou!

I have lots of updates for you guys, because I've had a super busy couple of weeks. First off, I started university about 2 weeks ago, which has been....interesting. I'm not sure if it's indicative of all French universities, but this place could not organise a piss up in a brewery. I spent the first week going to scheduled lectures that didn't happen, and only managed to get to a lecture on the first Thursday. For one of my seminars, the room and time was changed twice in advance, but as too many people showed up to the class, we had to move room another two times; and in another seminar, people had to sit on the floor because the room wasn't big enough. Because I'm an ERASMUS student, I'm not registered on any courses yet, and so, I'm not on any mailing lists. Apparently, extensive room and time changes for lectures is really common here, so if you're reading this as a prospective ERASMUS student...make sure you email your lecturers and seminar leaders to let them know you exist!

Friday 13 September 2013

YSL Rouge Volupté Shine: Review

I bought this in a Feel Unique haul, which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, because I had heard really good things about the Rouge Volupté Shines, and because the packaging was so irresistible. I bought the colour Fuchsia in excess which, as the name suggests, is beautiful bright fuchsia colour. I wanted a nice colour to take me from summer to autumn, and I think that this does the job perfectly. Rouge Volupté Shines are glossy, moisturising lip sticks (sort of like the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, but also a bit different; more later) which claim to seal in moisture for up to 8 hours, and protect the lips from free radicals. Big talk from YSL right there.

The Starting Off Project - Week 3 : Foundation

I took a week off from The Starting Off Project Last week, as I don't wear concealer, so I don't know enough to provide useful information to a beginner. However, this week's topic, foundation, is one that I know a fair bit about.

What is foundation?

Foundation is a skin coloured cosmetics product which is used to create an even coloured complexion. The Ancient Greeks were the first to apply a version of what is now foundation to their faces. This trend, that often consisted of applying lethal mixtures of white lead powder, animal fat and other ingredients to the face, continued until the early 20th century, when Carl Baudin of the Liebzieger Stadt theatre in Germany created a flesh coloured concoction made out of zinc, ochre and lard to conceal the join between his wig and his forehead. Although the formulation of modern foundation has changed drastically over the past 100 years, the basis of theatrical make up still stays true to this original recipe.

Before: redness, darkness around the eyes, and looking a bit tired  After: even skin tone and luminous skin!

You can get a number of different types of foundation, each of which is suited to different skin types. The three basic types are cream, liquid and powder, but this article goes into more detail click!

The Starting Off Project: Week one - Skincare

Your skin is your largest organ. It protects your from disease, damage and dehydration, yet a lot of people do not take care of their skin, possibly due to a lack of knowledge. Here I will outline some of the basics of skincare; although, I cannot tell you what is the best product for you, I can tell you what you need to do to have healthy skin.

Before I go into any details, you need to identify your skin type. This is a great guide to finding your skin type, if you don't already know. Your skin type will determine which products you use. Please note that you can be an intermediate skin type ie. I have normal to combination skin, which leans towards the oily side in summer, and leans towards the dry side in winter. I know this sounds complicated, but you don't need to worry about it right now, just keep an eye on it when the seasons change and adjust your skin care regime accordingly.

Cleansing

This is a pretty obvious one. We all (hopefully) are experienced in showering and bathing to wash away the dirt from our skin. However, when we hit puberty and/ or start to wear make up, things become a bit more complicated. This is a great explanation of why your skin changes when you become an adolescent. Not everyone gets raging acne, I didn't, but you might get a few more spots than when you were a child!

As your skin is producing more oil, and you're also slapping more and more make up on your face to cover up your dreaded zits, you need to make sure you clean your skin at the end of the day. This means taking your make up off (with a wipe, a cream cleanser, an oil cleanser), and then cleansing again to get deeper into the skin and get rid of any dirt that has found its way into your pores (I use a foaming cleanser and then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. If you miss this step, then you may get blackheads or spots. Because your body doesn't like it when foreign bodies get inside, it will fight back, which is where the redness and swellings come from.

I like to use Simple Kind To Skin Facial Wipes and then Clean and Clear Deep Action Oil Free Cream Wash, which leaves skin feeling squeaky clean and pores looking clean, without drying out the skin.

You can use toner after this step, but there is some debate as to whether it is a necessary, or a detrimental step. Read about it here.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating is important, because dead skin cells can obstruct the pore opening, when we exfoliate, it helps clogged pores become unclogged. The removal of dead skin cells also exposes the new ones, and so the skin looks brighter. Exfoliating is very important for males, because dead skin cells can obstruct the hair follicle, causing ingrown hairs. There are a number of exfoliators, physical and chemical. Physical ones use plastic balls, or natural ingredients, such as salt or sugar to crushed almond shells to buff away the dead cells. Chemical exfoliators use acids or enzymes to achieve the same result.

You should probably exfoliate once or twice a week if you are using a harsh exfoliator, such as The Body Shop Microdermabrasion (which I use). There are also some exfoliating cleansers that can be used everyday such as ... but these are much less harsh. As exfoliating dries out your skin, people with dry skin should exfoliate less than those with oily skin.

Moisturising

Cleansing your skin, washing it with water and exfoliating are quite drying, so you must moisturise afterwards. Again, the type of moisturiser that you use depends on your skin type. I have found a fantastic guide to choosing which moisturisers are good for you here.

Another thing to consider, is whether you want to use a day and a night cream, or one all purpose product. As everyone's skin has different needs, so the best thing is to experiment to find the best thing for you. Day creams are designed to be worn under make up, so they have a light, non greasy formulas. They are also designed to protect the skin from UV and free radical damage, and some contain caffeine to keep the skin looking firm. At night, the body repairs itself from damage. This is when the skin really works hard, so night creams are focused on restoring and moisturising the skin. They are usually thicker, and are absorbed slower, so we wake up with moisturised skin. I like to use the Day Cream and the Night Cream from the Body Shop's Aloe range.

SPF

This links to the discussion about day cream earlier. You must apply some kind of protection from UV rays to your skins if you want to avoid premature ageing and skin cancer. Lots of foundations, BB creams and tinted moisturisers contain SPF, but it isn't enough to provide adequate protection for the skin. Apparently, the best thing to do is to apply a sunscreen separately either under or over your moisturiser. To be honest, this is something that I am still working on getting right. If you want to read more about SPF here is a really interesting article about SPF and moisturiser.

So here is a very brief guide to the ins and outs of skin care. I don't want to scare anyone away from skincare, and I realise it can seem quite daunting, but I'd recommend that a beginner should consider each stage at a time.  It's really up to you to experiment with products to find out which work the best. The purpose of this post was to introduce the principles, so when you go to the skin care aisle of Boots, you know which kinds of products to go for, and then take it from there.

Lush Sunnyside Bubble Bar Review

Seeing as I will be in France for my birthday, my friend popped round the other week to give me an early birthday present. I got a bag full of amazing goodies, but one of them was a product I have been pining over for ages. This was the Lush Sunnyside bubble bar (£3.75), which is a beautiful sparkly bubble bar with a citrus scent. I have never used a Lush bath product (and I call myself a girl....), so I was super excited to give this a go, as well as being a bit worried that this would stain the bath (my mum would have killed me), but it went alright, there was a bit of residue, but that washed away easily.
